doing my civic duty

I had to report for jury duty yesterday which turned out to be a civil case: a woman suing the owner of the apartment she had been renting. The defendant was relatively young (and good looking) latino man who retained the services of a lawyer. The plaintiff appeared to be in her mid to late 40s with blue hair (and blonde roots) and seemed to have escaped from the set of Jerry Springer. She was representing herself; the poor thing. She didn't even know what questions to ask us prospective jurors.

The judge was cool. When the juror seated behind me was asked what she had done for a living before she retired she said she had been a jail matron down in L.A. The judge then cracked a Paris Hilton joke that everyone laughed at. The paintiff used her first challenge to excuse the former jail matron. The defendant use his first to get rid of me. Grrr. Anyway, later I was sitting outside the court building on a bench listening to my MP3 player when the judge came out for a smoke break. He called me by my name, shook my hand and thanked me for my service. We chatted for a bit and he confessed that he himself had only served on one jury. Before he left he shook my hand again which I thought was cool.
